The process of extrusion has many types, and one of them is called plastic extrusion. In this process, raw plastic is used and transformed to create several items such as rods, seals, plastic tubing, adhesive tape and plastic sheets by using tools like plastic extruders.

Some of the most commonly used plastic materials in plastic extrusion are nylon, polycarbonate, acetal, polyethylene, ABS or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and acrylic.

What are the types of plastic extrusion?

1. Blown film extrusion

This method is used when you want to manufacture plastic films to create shopping bags and objects similar to that. It is generally similar to a regular extrusion except for the die. In this method, the die used is like an upright cylinder that has a circular opening that can be as small as a couple of centimeters in diameter to as big as at least three meters. One advantage of this method is the quality variations it can provide.

2. Sheet or film extrusion

In this method, the materials are cooled by pulling them through a series of cooling rolls. They are also able to achieve the desired surface texture and sheet thickness via this method. A process that follows this particular extrusion process is called thermoforming, in which a sheet is exposed to heat until it turns into soft plastic so that you can mold it into any shape. But, if you are going to use vacuum when doing this, the method is called vacuum forming.

3. Tubing extrusion

In this process, plastic extruders are used to create tubes like medical tubing and drinking straws. It is also similar to regular extrusion except for the die. In this case, a mandrel or pin is used to extrude hollow sections. You can use one or several die depending on the number of lumens or holes necessary.

4. Compound extrusion

This process uses one or a combination of several polymers to create plastic compounds. You may use powder, liquid or pellets as feeds for injection molding and extrusion. Machineries are extremely helpful if you decide to use this method. You may get those small laboratory machines or those huge extruders found in large industries.

Those are just four of the many extrusion processes known today. They have evolved and improved over the years. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages over the others. Each also requires different types of equipment.

What is extrusion?

Extrusion is a process used in metals to change them into different shapes. The final products are then used in several industries such as automobile and aircraft companies. The process of shaping the metal is done by pushing it into a series of dies until the desired shape is achieved. Machineries and tools that come in various sizes and functionalities are used in order to do things faster and more efficiently.

What is hot extrusion?

Hot extrusion can also be referred to as hot working. It is the process where a piece of metal is deformed or melted by applying heat greater than its recrystallization temperature.

Extrusion may involve several sub-processes and they are drawing, forging, rolling and rotary piercing.

In drawing, tensile forces are used to stretch a metal. You can do any of the following drawing types: sheet, bar, tube or wire drawing.

In forging, localized compressive forces do the job. There are at least seven most common types and they are: drop, roll, press, upset, automatic hot, net-shape, near-net-shape, and induction forging.

In rolling, a pair or series of rolls are used where a metal stock could pass through. Flat, ring, and foil rolling are just three of the common rolling processes used today.

In rotary piercing, seamless tubing that has thick walls is formed. The process has two kinds: the Stiefel process and the Mannesmann process.

What are the advantages of hot extrusion over the other extrusion processes?

Some of the pros of doing hot extrusion are the following:

The material produced via hot extrusion is more ductile compared to the material produced via other processes.

It is much easier to perform hot extrusion because it requires less force and energy.

During the deformation process, the pores found in the metal are reduced in size or are completely closed up.

Because this process is done at very high temperatures, chemical inhomogeneities are minimized or are totally eradicated.

But, just like other things in this world, hot extrusion also has disadvantages. Here are some:

There might be unwanted reactions that may result from the exposure of the metal to the atmosphere of the surroundings.

You may need to purchase costly machineries such as an induction heater or a diesel furnace.

Aside from aluminium, there are several more materials which you can extrude. But before I enumerate some more of them, let me explain further what extrusion is and how it is done.

In order for you to change the shape of a metal, you should apply heat to it so that it would melt. You can make use of several tools and machineries to help you with the whole process.

There are various types of extrusion – hot extrusion, cold extrusion and warm extrusion. In hot extrusion, the temperature is kept at a high level to ensure that material is soft and will not harden easily. Hydraulic presses are often used in this type of process, that is why it is the most expensive among the three types.

In cold extrusion, the temperature is maintained at a level that is equal or below the room temperature. This is done so that the finished products will have good surface finishes and higher strength. Steel, copper, titanium, aluminum, lead, vanadium, molybdenum and tin are examples of materials commonly used in cold extrusion.

Finally, in warm extrusion, temperature is kept at a level greater than room temperature but lower than the material’s recrystallization temperature. This is done to achieve the best ductility and extrusion properties.

The other commonly used metals that can be extruded are the following:

1. Copper – used in making tubes, wire, cable sheathing and pipes

2. Steel – used in tracks and rods

3. Magnesium – used to manufacture nuclear industry parts and aircraft parts

4. Tungsten carbide – advisable to use because of its durability and toughness

5. Zinc – used in handrails, tubes, bar, rods, fitting and many hardware components

6. Lead – used in making wire, pipes, cable sheathing and tubes

7. Tin – also used in the same way as lead and copper

8. Titanium – used to manufacture engine rings, seat tracks for airplanes and other structural components

You can use either extruded aluminum or extruded steel depending on your desired final product. Remember that each of these metals has a unique set of properties that would suit your needs.

Annealing is studied in the fields of materials science and metallurgy. It refers to a process in which heat is applied to materials to cause alterations and changes to their properties. Metals are exposed to temperatures that are above their recrystallization points, and then they are left to cool. The process causes the material to be ductile and soft. It also minimizes the internal stress and refines its whole structure.

The most common metals used in annealing are silver, copper, brass and steel. The first three can be immediately soaked in water to cool them faster, while ferrous metals need to be cooled down at a much slower pace. The finished product can now go through several more processes such as stamping, shaping and forming.

The term process annealing is also known as in-process annealing, subcritical annealing and intermediate annealing. It is a kind of a treatment cycle that involves heat and tries to induce ductility into a piece of material to lessen its brittleness. Ductility is an important property a material should possess in order for you to successfully use it for extruding, forging or drawing.

There are three phases in the annealing process. They are the recovery, recrystallization and grain growth phases. The first one is done to soften the metal. Impurities and defects found on the crystals are removed. The second phase happens when new granular crystals begin to grow. They are supposed to be the replacements for those that were removed or deformed during the first phase. Finally, the last phase happens when the grains or crystallites start to increase in size.

Annealing also has specialized cycles and they are normalization, process annealing, full anneal and short cycle anneal. Process annealing has already been described above so I will move on to describe the other three. In normalization, after a metal is heated, it is cooled in air to relieve the stress produced. In full anneal, a metal is exposed to a temperature that is 50 degrees Celsius higher than the austenic temperature until austenites are formed. In short cycle anneal, normal ferrite is transformed into malleable ferrite by heating the material first and then cooling it and then heating it again.

Have you always wondered how clay pots, vases and other ceramics are made? Are you curious as to what processes and tools are involved in the whole creation process? Let me start by introducing you to clay extruders.

Clay extruders are the tools that you see in ceramic studios. They are available in many different shapes and sizes, making them ideal for any kind of task you want accomplished. If you are going to work on small objects such as children’s toys, a small extruder is just right for those. On the other hand, if you want to create large ceramic pieces, a commercial extruder is the tool that you will need.

Now, if you are determined to make your own ceramic basket, kitchen ware or vase at home, here are a few tips that could help you along the way.

Prepare the materials needed: dye, extruder and, of course, clay. Decide the size and shape of the object you are going to create. You could try making something that is circular, rectangular o irregularly shaped. Also, pick out a dye that you would use.

Get the clay ready. Drop it and the plunger to the extruder. Begin plunging. Once you detect that there is pressure produced, it means the clay is ready to come out. You could now start working on your vase or basket once your clay is extruded. You could look at various styles and designs online to aid you.

You would need to connect the pieces of clay and then bond, score and press them together. Do this repeatedly until you see that the clay pieces starting to form your desired shape. Now, if you are going to make a vase, it is wise to put an additional base to make sure that it would be able to hold water. After that, clean up the object that you created by removing the excess clay on the sides and the base. You could now use it and display it in your homes!

There are many other things that you can create with the help of these tools. If you want to know where to find one, just log on to the internet and use a search engine to look for companies that sell these devices. It is advisable that you do a comparison of the costs and features so that you can get a good quality extruder at a reasonable price.

What are the characteristics of aluminum decking?

Since extruded aluminum is used to build aluminum decking, the properties that aluminum possesses are evident in the decking itself. One good example is the weight. Aluminum is a light material, so expect the decking to be lightweight as well. Aside from that, it is also durable and can withstand changes in the weather. However, there is a tendency for it to get slippery and frosted during when it is cold. That is why it is important that you be careful so as not to slip and hurt yourself.

Another good thing about aluminum decking is it is cheaper than most of the other non-wood decking options. It can also be customized to become waterproof most especially during the rainy season.

The total cost of your whole aluminum decking would depend on the size you would want covered. It would also depend on which company’s services you are going to hire to install the decking at your home. As preparation for this, you can go online and check the prices of materials and make a comparison to be able to get the best deal.

A regular 6 by 2 feet plank costs between $200 and $300. The bigger one, which is at 8 by 2 feet, costs around $400 each. The support bean typically costs around $60 to $90 per piece.

You can try to build everything by yourself, but, let me tell you, it is not that simple. You can always choose to read about how to do the installation, but it is strongly advisable that you hire somebody who has much experience in this field.

Here is a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of aluminum decking:

Advantages:
1.	long-lasting
2.	water and weather resistant
3.	available at a reasonable price
4.	light weight

Disadvantages:
1.	slippery during cold climate
2.	installation is not that simple so it should be done by professionals

If you think you can live with its pros and cons, it is time that you seriously consider getting an aluminum decking for your balcony or patio.

In 2011, Pemco’s business will have been ‘up and running’ for a century. The phrase ‘up and running’ is carefully chosen because I think it captures the essence of what we were a hundred years ago, as well as what we still are today. That is to say we are a pioneering business that is still very much on the move and moving forward.
If you work for Pemco International, or with Pemco as a customer, you will sense that pioneering spirit in the ‘way we work’. Pemco people have a deep-seated passion about not only our products, but our customers’ technical issues and the how end-users demands are evolving. When customers buy from Pemco, they are not generally buying only a quality product, but a solutions-provider whose people have the know-how, energy and commitment to deliver.
